Gurevich SY developed the theory of the interaction of pulsed, electromagnetic and acoustic fields in ferromagnetic metals at the magnetic phase transition temperature.
He created the physical foundations of high-temperature and high-speed methods and means of non-contact acoustic quality control of metal products.
Gurevich Sergey Yurievich was born on February 6, 1945. In 1967 he graduated with honors from Chelyabinsk Polytechnic Institute and in the same year he was enrolled in postgraduate school. In 1970 he successfully defended his thesis and began to work in South Ural State University (CPI, CSTU) at the Department of General and experimental physics as a senior lecturer, associate professor, and since 1983 as a head of the Department. From 1995 to 1998 he was a dean of the Automate and Mechanical Faculty, then the Mechanical and Technological Faculty. In 1998 he was appointed to the post of pro-rector on educational work. Since 2006 he returned to the position of head of the Department of General and experimental physics.
Being a leading scientist in the field of magnetic phenomena physics, Gurevich S.Yu. has developed the theory of the interaction of pulsed electromagnetic and acoustic fields in ferromagnetic metals, which are at the temperature of magnetic phase transition.
Sergey Yurievich successfully manages university and academic laboratory of metal acoustics created on his initiative, which performed research works on the programs of the CMEA, the State committee for science and technology of the USSR, Academy of Sciences of the USSR, the State committee for public education of the USSR, the Ministry of education and science of the Russian Federation. The results of researches are recommended for implementation in the production by the Inter-industry Advisory Council under the Council of Ministers of the USSR.
Gurevich S.Yu. is an author of the registered discovery “Regularity of mutual transformation of electromagnetic and elastic waves in ferromagnets”. He created the principal physics for high-temperature and high-speed methods and means of non-contacting acoustic quality control of metal, and for registered scientific hypothesis “Hypothesis about the areas of high electromagnetic seismic activity”. The scientific hypothesis will serve as the basis for the development of new methods for the determination of the earthquake coordinates according to the previous electromagnetic signals. It can also be used to calculate the depth of the zones of high electromagnetic seismic activity, with the aim of identifying deposits of ferrum, nickel, cobalt at great depths and detection, which of the elements is the basis of a zone of high electromagnetic seismic activity.
Sergey Yurievich is an author of 220 scientific and educational publications, 25 inventions, a member of Exhibition of Economic Achievements (VDNKh), international scientific and technical exhibitions in Poland and Czechoslovakia. In 1994 he was elected as academician of New York Academy of Sciences. In 1995 he defended his Ph.D. thesis and in 1996 he was awarded the title of Professor, he has a European certificate of specialist in physical methods of non-destructive quality control of metal products.
He has published five monographs, including the monograph “Theory of physical fields” in 3 volumes, education guidance “Physics” with the stamp of the Ministry of education in two volumes (three editions). Gurevich S.Yu. has trained one Doctor and two Candidates of Sciences, supervises the research work on the Russian Foundation for Basic Research and the Ministry of education and science of the Russian Federation study grants. He is a Deputy Chairman of the Dissertation Council and a member of the editorial board of the scientific journal of the Russian Academy of Sciences “Defectoscopy”.
As pro-rector on educational work, Gurevich S.Yu. was active on the modernization of higher education, significantly increased independent work of students. With his active participation there have been created new branches and departments of South Ural State University, widely implemented new information technologies, scientific library of South Ural State University was among the best university libraries of the Ministry of education and science of the Russian Federation.
For many years of conscientious work Gurevich Sergey Yurievich was awarded the honorary title “Honored worker of higher school”, he was also awarded the Order of Friendship and medals.
Currently Gurevich S.Yu. supervises the research work of the Department of Process study of laser generation of ultrasonic surface and normal pulses in composite materials like metal – thermal protection coating. The aim of the work is the development of new methods of non-destructive acoustic quality control of products for the missile and aircraft industry.
